Style & Function

This chalet-style, four-bedroom luxury Whistler home is immaculately detailed with both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a spacious deck, plus impeccable landscaping featuring native plants and natural features to emphasize outdoor living and Whistler’s healthy lifestyle.

But supreme comfort and unmatched style don’t have to compromise the environment, and this stunning home is leading the way in green construction by, among other things, using recycled and reclaimed materials wherever possible, and sourcing more than 80 per cent of construction materials locally.

Rammed Earth Home

Rammed Earth

The Rammed Earth technique of construction is what truly defines this beautiful home both visually and philosophically.

Designed by following an ancient method used by the Yangshao culture in China dating back to 5,000 BCE, the 18” thick Rammed Earth walls create a uniquely healthy and comfortable home.

They provide unmatched soundproofing as well as natural protection from environmental hazards such as Radon and electromagnetic fields.

Using sand and gravel from nearby Pemberton, the finished walls feature a natural gradation that resembles a cross-section of the earth showcasing remarkable colours and layers. The Rammed Earth walls offer a startlingly beautiful contrast to the drywall and the vertical grain of the wood trim.

Kitchen

Kitchen Appliances

State-of-the-art Miele kitchen appliances were chosen for the home for their high performance. The induction stovetop is faster and more energy-efficient than traditional electric stovetops, allowing instantaneous control of cooking energy. It also doesn’t warm the surrounding air, resulting in further energy efficiencies.

The Miele hood fan was adapted to vent any heat generated from cooking back into the heat recovery system and the heat generated from the fridge is also captured from a fan and directed back into the same system. There is no external venting from the kitchen. Even cooking odours are eliminated through the charcoal filter.

Timbers

Timbers

The house is beautifully appointed with chalet-style timber and beams, but a luxury home that makes extensive use of old growth timber can still be easy on the environment. All of the roof rafters and roof decking are from timber harvested from standing dead Douglas Fir – known as grey ghosts - from central BC and milled at a small mill in nearby Lillooett.

Stairs

Carrera Marble

The stairway from the foyer features Carrera Marble, originally quarried from Nanaimo, BC and reclaimed from a shopping mall prior to renovation. The worn texture of the stair treads complements the Rammed Earth construction, blending old and new. This exquisite Carrera Marble has also been used on the walls of the Master Bathroom and on the countertops in all of the bathrooms.

Polished Concrete

The flooring throughout the house is four-inch thick polished concrete featuring in-floor hydronic heat. The polished concrete looks rich and stunning, and is consistent with the home’s commitment to a healthier living environment as it does not produce off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Windows

Fibreglass Windows

Just as the eyes are the windows to the soul, this home’s windows perfectly showcase the energy efficient designs at the heart of this Whistler home.

With window casings made by Cascadia Windows and Doors in Langley, BC, the insulated fibreglass material provides the best defence against heat transfer and are the tightest windows tested to date for air leakage.

The glass was also fabricated in Greater Vancouver.

The windows on the North, east and northeast façade are triple pane. On the southwest façade the windows are double paned to better take advantage of passive solar gain in the winter months. All the windows are Low E and filled with Argon gas.

Caesarstone

Caesarstone (also called Quartzstone, Sile stone)

Used for the kitchen counters, Cesarstone is a blend of rock powder and resin resulting in a surface that is harder than granite, totally inert, non-porous and that prevents the build up of surface mould and microbes. It's a non-toxic product for a better environment at home – and it looks positively beautiful, too!

Paperstone

Paperstone

Paperstone is an interior material fabricated from 100 per cent consumer paper waste sourced from Seattle, Wa. It was used on the bar in the kitchen - nicely complementing the Caesar stone countertop. A beautiful custom-built kitchen table and desk were also made from Paperstone.

Rainstone

Rainstone

Rainstone is a material fabricated from 60 per cent post-consumer paper waste sourced from Seattle, Wa. It is treated with a UV coating for protection from the elements for exterior applications. The rich burgundy colour is integral to the panels, providing long-term durability.
