Reclaimed Materials

A major theme of the house was to minimize the ecological footprint. Over 80% of the materials were sourced locally and reclaimed and recycled products were used wherever possible.

The worn texture of the stair treads compliments the Rammed Earth construction, blending old and new. It was also used on the walls of the Master Bathroom and the countertops in all of the bathrooms.

Performance

This home leads the new trend of “knowing how your house performs”.  It's one of the first homes in Canada where technology allows for data collection so that energy efficiency and air quality are monitored and documented.

Rammed Earth House

6618 Cedar Grove Lane –The 'intelligent-air' system keeps each room in the house perfectly tuned both in terms of temperature and fresh air, positioning it as one of the healthiest homes in Canada.  Air is circulated using ducts - the arteries of the system.  Heat sensors monitor the room temperature and adjust for optimum comfort.

Chapter 3

The Windows

How can you build a house to allow for maximum brightness and not lose energy through the windows?  Insulated fibreglass made by Cascadia Windows and Doors in Langley, BC provides the best defence against heat transfer.  They are the tightest windows tested to date for air leakage and are filled with Low E Argon gas which is an inert gas that maximizes the thermal performance of the windows.

Rammed Earth House

6618 Cedar Grove Lane – The windows you see from here are triple glazed at the back of the house to keep the heat inside while the windows at the front of the house are double glazed to take advantage of passive solar gain in the winter months.

The Framing Story

A luxury home with extensive use of old growth timber can still be sustainable.  All of the roof rafters and roof decking are from timber harvested from standing dead Douglas Fir from central BC. The timbers were milled at a small mill in Lilloett.

Chapter 1

What exactly is Rammed Earth?

Rammed earth is a technique used to build walls using locally sourced raw materials. It's an ancient method used by the Yangshao culture in China dating back to 5000 BCE that has seen a revival as people seek more sustainable building materials and natural building methods.

Main Bedroom

6618 Cedar Grove Lane improved upon the technique.   6 natural materials were used:  sand and aggregate sourced from the Pemberton area, water, 10% Portland cement, Roxul natural insulation and non-toxic sealer.  The walls are 18 inches thick and are the same inside and out.  Rammed Earth is thermally insulating, very strong and hardwearing.
